Speaker: Dr. Uday Nawalekar, Principal, Parvekar College, Yavatmal
The first session of the day was conducted by Dr. Uday Nawalekar, who discussed the concept of Universal Human Values with a focus on achieving happiness through the right understanding. The session began with Dr. Nawalekar engaging students by asking whether they prefer tragic or comedy movies, before diving into the science of happiness, briefly explaining the role of hormones such as oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin, and endorphin in emotional well-being.
The session began with second-year student Ms. Sharvari Deshmukh introducing Dr. Uday Nawalekar, followed by TPO Asst. Prof. A. B. Solanke felicitated the speaker. Dr. Nawalekar discussed the concept of Universal Human Values, focusing on achieving happiness through right understanding.
Dr. Nawalekar shared his qualifications and reassured students that they could approach him for therapy or guidance should they face any mental health issues. He illustrated how mental health challenges can affect anyone by showing two video clips: one of Kapil Sharma and another of Michael Phelps, both of whom had struggled with depression. He emphasized that seeking help from professionals, as these celebrities did, is crucial in overcoming mental health problems.
Dr. Nawalekar discussed the four elements of happiness: dopamine, oxytocin, endorphin, and serotonin. Techniques to maintain happiness include detachment, overcoming fears, avoiding unsolicited advice, being optimistic, learning to say no, avoiding procrastination, and enjoying work. Elon Musk and Amitabh Bachchan are believed to be among the happiest due to their workaholic nature and ability to balance work with passions. Additional tips for happiness include paying attention to small things, surrounding oneself with good company, maintaining a proper diet, exercising, getting quality sleep and relaxation, using colors in food, clothing, and surroundings, listening to good music, maintaining cleanliness and order, paying attention to lighting, noise levels, and mobile screen distance, controlling anger, not advertising personal problems, and thinking less and doing more.
At the end of the session, Dr. Nawalekar encouraged students to ask questions or express their thoughts on stage to overcome stage fear. Some students took the opportunity to come forward and engage in a lively discussion, sharing their views on how to stay happy.
Dr. Nawalekar concluded the session with his final words:
“Happiness is not a destination, it is a journey.”
